1/17/2024 0 Comments Reach weapon stunning strike 5eAgain, I wouldn't rank Heightened spell as A-tier, but it's probably B to C range. But we could also compare it to Sorcerer's Heightened Spell, which requires 3 Sorcerer points and a spell slot, effectively doing what a Monk can do with 3 ki points when they cast for example Hold Person at level 2. The Champion's increased crit Range at level 3 isn't an A-tier ability, but it is still a very solid ability, and Stunning Strike is arguably as good as that. So comparing to A-tier features like a good spell or high damage from other classes isn't very comparable. But more importantly, I again did say it's not an A-tier ability. I mean, I disagree that since Tasha's that is the only thing going for a Monk. If we assume that they Flurry of Blows and try to stun on each hit (we’ll assume that 3/4 strikes hit as that seems likely), then they just spent 4 Ki in one turn to try to stun people when, again, they might not have a great save dc for their Ki (and they might be fragile given their d8 hit die, middling AC, and if Dex and Wis are primary and secondary respectively, then con is likely tertiary and thus not great for HP). This, combined with how Dex will likely be your primary stat to help you hit with your punches which means that Wisdom is likely your secondary stat and thus your Ki save DC will likely lag behind those of casters and other characters with save or suck abilities of comparable level and power, means that as useful as a stun may be, the monk struggles to stun efficiently relative to the ki spent.įor instance, a level 5 monk has 5 Ki points. Not to mention that each Stun attempt consumes 1 ki, so to force 3 stun attempts you’ll have to hit 3 times, which isn’t necessarily likely, and then spend 3 ki points just for that without taking into account Ki spent on stuff like Flurry of Blows. Monks don’t get many magic bonuses to hit, and ki keys (heh) off of Wisdom while Unarmed Strikes are Dex based. And you'll have the mobility to make that decision at any time. If you decide that maybe you need stunning strike, you can go ahead and use it. Nothing about this keeps you from kicking some dudes head in. The best part of the build: you're still a 100% functional monk. Your high mobility, AC, and deflect missiles makes you incredibly survivable at range, which is exactly where you'll be. Focused Aim in particular is great if you pick up sharpshooter to ensure you hit. Use your ki on Deft Strike or Focused Aim. You can give any weapon a +1/2/3 bonus so not getting one from your weapon is actually good for you. Try to find magic items like bracers of archery or an oathbow. Take feats like Sharpshooter or Martial Initiate for the Archery style. At level 5, this gives us as many attacks as a crossbow expert build except with a better dice. If you use your Ki as part of your action, you can make an attack with a monk weapon (which thanks to kensei can include a longbow). The new Tasha's monk features actually work really well for Kensei, specifically a bow wielding one.
